Christmas Stocking Sewing Pattern - 2 different versions...

Version 1: Whole Cloth

Materials:
1/2 yard Christmas print cotton and 1/4 yard contrast or white cotton for cuff
2” wide x 6” long strip for hanger loop OR 6” strip double fold extra wide bias tape

1. cut 2 pieces of stocking body, using print. cut 1 cuff placing center line on fold

2. Body - with right sides together, stitch around stocking body beginning at the top, down around foot and back up to top using 1/2 inch seam allowance. Turn stocking right side out and press.

3. Cuff - right sides together, seam short ends together forming a ring. Fold in half with wrong sides together making a narrower ring. Press

4. Hanger loop - fold and press 1/2 inch into the center of the 2 inch wide strip along each long side. Fold in half so the raw edges are inside and the pressed folded edges meet. Edge stitch along each long end. OR cut 6 inch strip of extra wide double fold bias tape and stitch along open side.

5. Fold 6 inch long hanger in half and place two ends at top of the back seam of the stocking with the loop hanging down inside the stocking.

6. Place and pin the cuff inside the stocking with the raw edges even at the top and the back seams aligned. Stitch all around the top, through the stocking, 2 layers of cuff and through hanger loop at back. Turn cuff to the outside and down over the stocking body. The loop should be at the top of the folded down cuff at the back seam.

Version 2: Pieced stocking

Materials: foundation - 1/2 yard muslin or thin cotton batting
stocking body: scrap pieces of solid color and Christmas print fabric cut into strips 1 1/2 to 2 1/2 inches wide by 12 inches long, enough to cover both sides of stocking
Cuff: 1/4 yard contrast color or white

1. Stocking foundation - cut 2 stocking body pieces of foundation, facing opposite directions using lining or batting

2. Place scrap strip right side up across calf of one stocking foundation, overlapping the foundation edges, and stitch along both long edges across the stocking

3. Place new scrap strip face down over the first strip with one raw edge together and stitch long that edge across stocking. Flip scrap right side up, press. Place another scrap along the edge of the second strip, stitch, flip, press. Work to the toe and the top and cover both body pieces. Trip the strips to the stocking shape after you finish covering the foundation.

IMPORTANT: when covering the foundation pieces, one toe should point left and the other should point right.

4. Finish using steps 2 through 6 for version 1.

OPTIONAL LINING: cut another 2 body pieces of fabric, stitch together, turn right side out and place inside the pieced stocking before attaching hanger and cuff. Match all top raw edges, stitch, turn cuff outside and down over stocking.
