Knit Hat w/loom

Round-Board Knit Hats by Herschel O. Johnson...

3. Make a lasso loop in your yarn (with a 6 inch tail), and place over the black starting peg. Keep the yarn slack, do not draw it too tight. Place tension on the yarn to the left of the black peg. (Leave the tail out of the knitting but do not cut it off)

4. The board will always be turned counter clock wise.

  • Wrap the yarn once, counter clock wise, around each tee until you return to the black peg. Continue the yarn loosely past the black tee, using the nut pick, lift the
  • loop on the black peg over the yarn leaving a new loop on the tee.
  • Continue in this manner around the board 40 times (40 rows).
  • (The size of cap depends upon the number of rows, I have been instructed to use 36 to 45 rows)

5. After completing the desired number of rows, thread your needle with 42 inches of a contrasting color of yarn.

* Run single yarn, starting at first tee left of black tee, and put through the right side of the loop on the inside of each tee. Leave the two ends of the contrasting yarn loose and about 5 to 6 inches long.

6. Continue lifting loops over the main yarn for 40 more rows.

7. When you return to the black peg for the last row, leave about 3 feet of main yarn and cut it from the skein.

8. Next draw the two 6 inch tails of contrasting yarn through to the right side of the knitting. (This will mark the fold at the lower edge of the cap.)

9. Bring the starting edge down over the black tee. Place the loops of the starting edge over each successive tee. Starting with black tee, lift lower loop over the upper loop on each tee. Thread the needle with the 36" length of yarn at the end of your knitting.

* Repeat as in step 5.

10. Remove the cap from the board, by slipping the stitches off of each tee.

11. Stretch and pull your knitting into a flat rectangle about 5'' by 7", then draw up the long yarn like a draw string. Pull draw sting as tight as you can until there is barely a hole at the top of the cap. Tie the sting from lasso loop tail and the long yarn together three times. Leave six inches of the drawstring yarn attached and cut.off the rest

12. Thread the two double yarns from the pom pom. through the hole, sew one single string around the hole and tie in a hard knot; repeat once again and tie hard square knot. Then tie two pairs of stings together with a square knot.

Bring the last two strings from right side of cap through the hole ,sew one around and tie them together. Using all six strings, divide them three in each hand and tie into a hard knot. three times. Trim the yarns 3/8" from the last knot.

13. Take the two ends of the contrasting yarn and draw them tight to draw the bottom of the cap together, fold the brim up and draw the yarn again, then pull the contrasting yarn out of the cap - FINISHED!

Follow the instructions that came with the pom pom maker to make the pom pom.

Best Wishes, Herschel and Helen

Gail White - Edited to add that the above makes a 2 layer hat and instruction for single layer are below...

  • · To make a single layer hat, start as above. After knitting 3-5 inches , you create the brim as follows :
  • · With one loop on the tees, fold down the knitting and place the very first row of loops you made back over the tees. Starting at black tee, lift the bottom loop over the top loop and off the tee, leaving one loop on tee.
  • · Continue knitting as before, wrapping yarn around tees and lifting off the bottom loops, until you each the desired size, approximately 40 more rows, , maybe 5-8 inches long?.
  • · Cut off the yarn , leaving a 6 inch tail. Cut a 36 inch long piece of yarn. With a yarn needle, run this yarn under each loop on the tees all the way around.
  • · Carefully lift the loops off the tees, then pull on both ends of the 36” yarn to gather the top of the hat . Tie the 6 inch tail and the ends of the gathering yarn together with square knots, trim to 5”, and use these to tie on a pompom.
  • · At the brim, use a yarn needle or crochet hook to weave the starting tail into the hat to lock and hide.
  • · Both techniques can also be used on the Nifty Knitter from www.Hancockfabrics.com , a set of 4 plastic circular looms for $25.
