Round-Board Knit Hats by Herschel O. Johnson...
3. Make a lasso loop in your yarn (with a 6 inch tail), and place over the black starting peg. Keep the yarn slack, do not draw it too tight. Place tension on the yarn to the left of the black peg. (Leave the tail out of the knitting but do not cut it off)
4. The board will always be turned counter clock wise.
5. After completing the desired number of rows, thread your needle with 42 inches of a contrasting color of yarn.
* Run single yarn, starting at first tee left of black tee, and put through the right side of the loop on the inside of each tee. Leave the two ends of the contrasting yarn loose and about 5 to 6 inches long.
6. Continue lifting loops over the main yarn for 40 more rows.
7. When you return to the black peg for the last row, leave about 3 feet of main yarn and cut it from the skein.
8. Next draw the two 6 inch tails of contrasting yarn through to the right side of the knitting. (This will mark the fold at the lower edge of the cap.)
9. Bring the starting edge down over the black tee. Place the loops of the starting edge over each successive tee. Starting with black tee, lift lower loop over the upper loop on each tee. Thread the needle with the 36" length of yarn at the end of your knitting.
* Repeat as in step 5.
10. Remove the cap from the board, by slipping the stitches off of each tee.
11. Stretch and pull your knitting into a flat rectangle about 5'' by 7", then draw up the long yarn like a draw string. Pull draw sting as tight as you can until there is barely a hole at the top of the cap. Tie the sting from lasso loop tail and the long yarn together three times. Leave six inches of the drawstring yarn attached and cut.off the rest
12. Thread the two double yarns from the pom pom. through the hole, sew one single string around the hole and tie in a hard knot; repeat once again and tie hard square knot. Then tie two pairs of stings together with a square knot.
Bring the last two strings from right side of cap through the hole ,sew one around and tie them together. Using all six strings, divide them three in each hand and tie into a hard knot. three times. Trim the yarns 3/8" from the last knot.
13. Take the two ends of the contrasting yarn and draw them tight to draw the bottom of the cap together, fold the brim up and draw the yarn again, then pull the contrasting yarn out of the cap - FINISHED!
Follow the instructions that came with the pom pom maker to make the pom pom.
Best Wishes, Herschel and Helen
