Special Guest

Penny Slater of the Hebron Christian Church in Hebron, OH came to our meeting loaded down with four trash bags filled with handmade items for the babies. She explained that each winter a special project is planned for the youth of her Church, e.g., one year they held a Vacation Bible School – each year it’s a different project.

On January 29 of this year Ann Marie spoke to a group of adults and youth at the Church, telling them of our mission and showing all the items that we make. From that talk emerged the project for the winter of 2008. Penny decided that crocheting was something that the young people, both boys and girls, could learn to do. The group met once a week to work on projects, enjoy fellowship and share a meal. Penny said that during Church services, the boys/girls came to her with questions and asking help on their crocheting projects. This intrigued some of the adults, who then began working on the project, too. Penny brought 475 individual items. One lady made over 100 items. How great is that!!!

Get Well Soon

We just learned that Chapter member, Jerry Lawson, recently went through triple bypass surgery. Our prayers and best wishes go out to Jerry and Joan. If you wish to send a card: Jerry Lawson – 64 North Gould Rd. Columbus, OH 43209.

Just a Memory

Hard to believe, but the 2008 Convention is over. 70 plus volunteers from 11 states converged on Sts. Peter & Paul Retreat Center April 24-26. The hands on “make it, take it” classes were very well received – nothing but good comments from all who attended. The teachers did a wonderful job

The ladies were delighted with their completed/almost completed blankets, hats,

booties, quilts, bibs and burp cloths. Beginners enjoyed learning the basics and the more advanced were eager to try new techniques and/or more complicated patterns. A great big thanks to all the teachers and teacher aides.

Many of us also learned a new way to tie a ribbon. Jann Vasbinder, never one to throw away anything that can be made into something else, showed a tool she learned about at a class she attended – the tool consisted of a piece of wood with finishing nails pounded in at intervals. With this primitive tool, Jann showed us how to make a bow (of any size) that will not (guaranteed) come undone. Collecting ribbons that were tied around the cutlery, Jann and several others made beautiful bows. Now Jerry Lawson, not to be outdone, went home and made his own tool and spent most of Friday making bows of many sizes – he then taught a class on bow making for anyone interested.

Of course, it goes without saying, the food was delicious. Our cooks – Tom & Sandy Oole, Tom and Kathy Cooper and our own Steve Vasbinder really outdid themselves.

“And a great time was had by all.”
