President’s Report

We are happy to announce that our donations to St. Joseph’s Hospital will now be helping patients in their new Pediatric Cardiothoracic Intensive Care Unit (CTICU) as well as babies in their NICU. The Pediatric CTINU is believed to be the first of its kind in the country. This 24-bed unit is set to open August 15th, and will care for critically-ill heart patients (babies, children, and teenagers). They have asked us for more blankets/quilts and will accept larger sizes – especially for boys. (This is a great way to use your darker colors!)

We also found out that we are servicing TWO hospitals through Phoenix Children’s Hospital – the one where babies are born, including multiples like the recent quints (Good Samaritan Hospital campus) and the other facility that helps sick babies (Thomas Road and the 51 freeway). Thanks to your generosity and willingness to give, we are helping many babies and their families in our area!

Look What We Accomplished

In July, 2,913 items and 1.5# of yarn were received. We donated 2,069 finished items with 1,601.5 volunteer hours. We gave donations to Banner Children’s Hospital NICU, St. Joseph’s Hospital NICU, Los Niņos Hospital, Maricopa Medical Center, and the Arizona Mesa Mission. These included 80 newborn kits, 84 quilts/afghans, 68 incubator blankets, 49 beanie snakes, 219 hats, 24 burial layettes, 122 NICU clothes, 3 toys, 61 burp-cloths or bibs, 3 large positioning aids, 74 pairs of booties/socks, 3 memory envelopes, 2 new clothes, 106 gently-used clothes, and 8 gently-used blankets/afghans.

Continuing Needs

We really need boy burial clothes now. We have lots of burial afghans, quilts, and gowns, but are short of boys clothes for burial layettes. Our continuing needs are: burp-cloths, hospital T’s, washcloths (esp. pink), and large boy-themed quilts. THANKS!

Cash donations are always appreciated for postage and purchasing supplies that aren’t donated. Make checks payable to: Newborns in Need Mesa AZ Chapter and contact: www.newbornsinneed.org/mesa

Thank-you’s

We received a thank-you note and picture from Banner Children’s Hospital. “Thank you for your continued year-round support for the patients we care for in our NICU. Although our acknowledgments are sporadic at best, our thanks and devotion to all of you is endless! Every month you have provided us with dozens of blankets, beanie snakes for positioning, baby clothes, lovely quilts and afghans and hats and booties. Most recently we enjoyed the patriotic themed clothes and blankets—they were a real hit with all the families around Independence Day! Thank you for all the money, time, skill, and love that you have poured into our unit and our patients. Your hard work is appreciated daily. Happy August, Happy Monsoon, and much love from all of us working the NICU at Banner Children’s Hospital.” –Cheryl Alexander RNC, BSN, Developmental Program Manager, Banner Children’s Hospital NICU

NIN National News

All volunteers are encouraged to count EVERY hour spent on NIN activities and turn in the total monthly to be included in our chapter monthly report. The Home Office uses them to maintain our 501C tax-exempt status and when applying for grants. They are able to apply for more grants and receive greater donations if the number of volunteer hours show that NIN is actively working hard for the babies.

Drop-Off Locations
