President’s Report

This month we celebrate our 6th birthday as a chapter of Newborns in Need! Since February 2001 we have donated 106,935 items to area hospitals and other agencies serving babies in need!  Our volunteers have given 78,197 hours of service.   We distributed 36,665 items throughout central and northern Arizona in 2006.  This was up 32% from 2005!  Working together we are making a difference!

We received several thank you letters this month.  Sue West wrote in response to our donations to Los Niños Hospital: “A very special thank you for your kindness and generosity! Your donation is fantastic and will be put to excellent use!  Many thanks to you. We have said it before, it is truly through the generosity and kindness of people like you that we are able to continue our efforts of enhancing the lives of the infants, children and young adults of Hacienda Health Care and all its affiliates.”

C. Diane Bishop listed the items we gave and thanked us for “your kind and generous support of the infants at Maricopa Medical Center.”

Sister Wappett from the Arizona Mesa Mission of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints wrote: “Thank you so much for the newborn kits.  They are truly appreciated. Over the past years they have been real gifts to the babies on the reservations.  We have distributed them through the missionaries who serve in these areas.  They have been delivered quarterly to the Mission Office and we have kept ahead of the need nicely.  With your delivery on January 30 we should be fine until July.  Thanks so much for your love and compassion.  Your time and talents are greatly appreciated.”

Suzanne Helzer, the Bereavement Services/RTS Coordinator at Banner Desert Medical Center, was thrilled with the things we took in this month.  She said they sometimes get things that are poorly made and they are almost ashamed to use them.  She complimented us on the beautiful items we give.  They appreciate the fine workmanship, quality fabrics, and evidence of love in each item.  Since these are the last things the family can give their babies, such special touches and evident care really matter. Suzanne mentioned that she was going to do a training meeting for Scottsdale Osborn Hospital and may share some of our things with them.  She is also in contact with a hospital in the Virgin Islands and some of our things may find their way there.

Thanks to Marilyn Freeman and Denise Young for helping Shirleen get all the deliveries made in January. Thanks, too, for them as well as Barbara Ward and Kathy Overturf for their help on Fridays throughout the month to assemble newborn kits, burial layettes and preemie layettes to prepare our donations for delivery.

With your continuing help, we will make a difference in the lives of many children!!

Continuing Needs

We need 150-175 bibs or burp cloths each month for newborn kits and NICU layettes. So keep them coming! We need small preemie booties to include in burial layettes. We also need memory envelopes and boy’s burial clothing in either medium preemie or newborn sizes.

Cash donations are always appreciated for postage and purchasing supplies that aren’t donated.  Make checks payable to: Newborns in Need Mesa AZ Chapter and contact: www.newbornsinneed.org/mesa

Preemie Doll Donated to Our Chapter

One of our volunteers, Becky Bright, is the featured artist at TheAngel Keepers Inc.  She is so pleased to be able to sculpt babies for their special line of “babies” lovingly named MiniMiracles”. She donated MacKinley Grace, a preemie-replica doll to our chapter at our February work meeting. This doll will be a wonderful aid when giving presentations about our mission to aid babies and their families.

Chapter Meeting

  • Crocheted butterflies
  • Show and Tell

Our next monthly meeting will be at JoAnn Fabrics, 965 S. Gilbert Road, Mesa, AZ from 10 a.m. to noon on Friday, March 2nd, 2007. Gini Bretall will show us how to make crocheted butterflies that can be used to decorate diaper bags or memory envelopes.  We will also tie ribbon on sets of diapers, soap, and washcloths for newborn kits.  Becky Bright noticed how crowded our meetings are getting and has offered the use of her home in northeast Mesa for our meetings.  Let a member of our chapter board know if you have a preference of meeting at her home or continuing to meet at JoAnn’s Fabrics.

Help Newborns in Need via the Internet!

Marcy Gushee found the coolest thing!  She got a newsletter from one of her other charities and it told about a search engine that raises money for charity, www.goodsearch.com. You put in the name of your charity and use it to do all your searches, and the site will donate money to your charity.  National Newborns in Need is already registered there. So happy searching and you will be helping babies in need!
