President’s Report

We have much to be grateful for as we begin a new year and reflect on the past. We have been able to add two facilities, Mercy Gilbert Hospital and Phoenix Baptist Hospital, to the places we donate to because of the increased number of donations we are receiving.  Thank you to each generous volunteer! We are indeed making a difference in the lives of babies and their families in our area.

We received three thank you letters this month.  Diane Jenkins wrote: “On behalf of the Phoenix Indian Medical Center, Behavioral Health Department, this letter is written to express our sincere gratitude for the 20 newborn kits and stuffed animals that were provided for our newborn infants.  Your generosity and creativity allows for our newborns to have a nice outfit, as well as a warm blanket upon their first visit home. Again, thank-you, for your donations and on-going support. May you all have a Happy and Safe New Year.”

Jerenda Ford, Volunteer Coordinator at St. Joseph’s Hospital sent a card: “St. Joseph’s NICU babies and their families think you’re the greatest. For your continued work in giving them the best place to grow and glow. Thanks so much for all you do. I’m late getting thanks to you.  You’ve dropped off several deliveries that you didn’t get thanked for.  It wasn’t that it wasn’t noticed—we just have been busier in Nursery ICU than I have ever seen it in the 8 years I’ve been here.  Yet even though you hadn’t heard from me—you continued to sew and send Shirleen in with all your love.  You are awesome and we truly do love and appreciate each and every one of you.”

Tracy Stephens, Nursery Charge Nurse sent a letter and the pictures on page two of this newsletter: “Just a note from all of us here at Phoenix Memorial Hospital to thank everyone at Newborns in Need for all their hard work, thoughtfulness and love that goes into making the beautiful layettes and quilts that you supply us with for our babies on an ongoing basis. We especially love Christmas time when we are able to provide each infant with a colorful hat, and we make a big production out of letting the mom choose which she’d like best for her baby!  Some of our mom’s and babies were pretty sick this year, but the wonderful quilts and your love brought smiles to their faces!  With the busy-ness of the season, none of us had given a thought to preparing a basket of goodies for the first New Years Baby, but with your help and a quilt and layette set and some other things the girls brought in, we were able to start that little girl off with a bang!  With our population, at times there continues to be a need for clothing to be provided to them upon discharge. We continue to use the larger quilts for covering the isolettes to keep out the light and noise when the babies are small and need extra time to grow. We are having fewer demises and have plenty of the layettes for that purpose, so we probably don’t need more of those layettes at this time. We have noticed that the babies that are having trouble keeping their temperatures stable after birth stay warmer when we put socks on them. We don’t stock booties and I found a pair of hand-sewn cotton hand mitts from you in one of the kits. I put them on the cold baby’s feet and she was able to maintain her temp after that! Is there anyone in the group who might be willing to whip us up some booties?  I know the group is a talented one by looking at all the beautiful hats and the embroidery on the blankets that come in. We really do appreciate all the time and effort spent by ALL of you who continue to give of yourselves for the good of our babies. Thank you so much!!”

Thanks to Denise Young, Marilyn Freeman and her son, Chad, and LeAnn Daniels for helping Shirleen get all the deliveries made in December.

With your continuing help, we will make a difference in the lives of many children!!
