How to Volunteer

Becoming a volunteer is easy, rewarding and fun!
Here are some answers to commonly asked questions.

I'd like to volunteer from home, but am also interested in a group activity. Where do I make and donate my items?
Our volunteers work from their homes and meet once a month to turn in their finished items. They also join other NIN volunteers on group projects. These informal gatherings are referred to as "work meetings". Many of our volunteers have been attending for over a year and love it! It's a good place to make new friends, exchange patterns and ideas, help to meet our monthly service goals and see all the lovely handmade items your fellow volunteers have donated.

What if I am not able to attend a work meeting?
Volunteers are not required to attend work meetings, however volunteer attendance is encouraged to assist in meeting the monthly goals for the hospitals and medical centers that we serve. Volunteers may drop off finished items at any work site, even though they may not be able to stay for the meeting. Volunteers who live too far from any of the work sites, may mail their finished items to the local office at Newborns in Need Sugar Hill, GA Chapter,
5402 Orchard Way, Buford, GA 30518

Where are the work meetings held?
See "
Map To Work Meetings" for directions.

I'd like to attend a work meeting, but I don't know how to sew, knit or crochet? Can someone teach me?
Yes! We have instructors on hand at all work sites to walk any new volunteer through our projects. Special classes are held to teach a variety of skills such as sewing burial gowns, crocheting booties or machine stitching a quilt. The
Newsletter lists work sites where classes are held. The classes are always free of charge to NIN volunteers.

I love to sew, but I'm on a fixed income and cannot afford to purchase the materials needed. Does the chapter supply any?
Yes! Many of our volunteers have years of sewing, knitting and crochet experience, but are unable to provide the materials needed for the projects. The donation dollars our chapter receives goes toward the purchase of fabric, yarn and sewing notions for our volunteers use. These supplies are available at our work sites and may be
checked out to complete at home.

Does the chapter have any special patterns I should use?
NIN has developed a series of patterns that we recommend to our volunteers. These patterns are part of our pattern packs #1 and #2. Any pattern that is suitable can be used; however, we have found that doll patterns are just not designed to fit properly.

How can I purchase a pattern pack?
Patterns packs are available. Your purchase dollars go back into the organization to purchase fabric and supplies and to print more pattern packs. Pattern packs and other patterns are available at each work site. See "
Pattern Packs" for a complete description and how to order by mail.
