Here is a list of the basic items that we provide for babies. We need these items every day of the year.

Basic Layette:

Quilt or Afghan minimum size 36”x36” -- can be larger
Receiving Blanket
Sleeper or gown
Undershirt or top
Bib and matching burp pad
Matching cap & booties or socks
Pacifiers and bottles
Baby Toiletries
Onesies or other Outfits

If you sew, crochet, or knit we can use your help. We also need volunteers to sort, pack, make deliveries, so you do not have to only be able to make baby clothing. We need baby afghans and booties and caps that are from the same yarn so they match; it helps to keep down the number of mismatched sets. We need both preemie and newborn sizes.

If you would like to sew for babies give us a call. We will trace off 1 or 2 patterns with instructions and tips and mail to you asap. If you would like to come by our office we can provide you with a couple of traced off patterns along with some fabric to get you started.

Once you have sewn a few things you may want to mail them to us or drop them off at one of our drop-off locations so we can make sure that everything is correct. We usually have no problems at all but it is always best to be sure before sewing a whole bunch of items.

Patterns and Fabrics:

Our chapter has 3 pattern sets available for $5 each, $6.50 postpaid. Each one has an assortment of 20 - 30 preemie and newborn patterns. We suggest that you send an email or call the office to let us know what you would like to sew for us.

Very few commercial patterns are sized right for newborns and especially for preemies.

It is important to use proper, good quality fabrics like flannels, fleece, and interlock and good quality thread. Cottons are great also especially for quilt tops.
